Primarily Civil War letters by and to William Tanner describing army life at Camp Nelson (Ky.), guarding John Hunt Morgan and his men, the campaign to capture Cumberland Gap, garrison duty at Crab Orchard (Ky.), scarcity of provisions, etc. Letters from family and friends in Old Hickory, Ohio relate family and farming news, news about railroad construction, and political news. Also included are naturalization and pension records and other miscellaneous items. Tanner was a soldier in Co. G, 86th Ohio Infantry.
